RANGERS Ladies Scottish Women’s Cup hopes ended at the Semi Final stage after a 4-0 defeat to Hibernian at Forthbank Stadium.
Hibs took the lead as a ball across the six yard box was turned into the net by Katey Turner. There was a moment of confusion as the assistant appeared to flag for offside. However, after the officials consulted, the goal stood.
Rangers thought they had equalised moments later as an Amy Muir corner was headed into the net. The referee’s decision once again went in Hibs’ favour as the goal was ruled out for a foul on the keeper.
Immediately after the Rangers’ “goal” was ruled out, Hibs would score two in quick succession to add to the lead. Rachel McLauchlan caught out Jordyn Elliott in the Rangers goal by scoring direct from a cross ball. If there was an element of fortune in the second there certainly wasn’t in the third as a stunning, 30 yard strike from Lisa Robertson sneaked underneath the bar and into the net.
Rangers weren’t without their chances in the first half; Lauren Davidson was played through on goal by a delightful ball from Chantelle Brown. Davidson’s shot was inches past the post. Hayley Sinclair came close to turning in a Davidson cross but once again it was narrowly past the post.
Rangers came out in the second half looking for the goal that would get them back into the tie. Davidson seemed like Rangers’ best chance of grabbing a goal. Davidson was again played through on goal by Brown but she was denied by a fine save from Jenna Fife. Davidson nicked the ball off of Robertson at the halfway line and raced through on goal but was again denied by Fife.
Claire Gemmell thought she had pulled a goal back as her half volley from the edge of the box found the top corner. However, the assistant’s flag was up again and this time it stayed up as the goal was ruled out. Any hope of a Rangers revival was over when Abigail Harrison found space to head in the fourth goal from a corner.
A disappointing afternoon for Rangers who will now look to pick themselves up as they return to league action next Sunday against Spartans. Kick-off is scheduled for 1pm at Ainslee Park.
