PEDRO CAIXINHA was thrilled with Carlos Pena’s “best” performance in a Rangers shirt last night – but reckons there’s even more to come from the Mexican.
Pena netted twice in the terrific 3-0 defeat of St Johnstone at McDiarmid Park, and contributed plenty to what was an all-round impressive collective effort.
Speaking to RangersTV, a delighted Caixinha said: “I think it was definitely his best performance alongside the team’s best performance. I believe when teams play compact like this and teams perform together, it is much easier for the key players or the players who can solve games to express themselves even easier.
“So I am pleased for him – I know what type of player we are talking about and I know he still has much more to give. It is a question of him keeping believing in himself, us giving him the confidence and keeping working hard.”
Gers, as ever, were backed by a huge support in Perth last night, and when the Light Blues found themselves under periods of pressure, the fans responded – and their efforts were very much appreciated by Caixinha last night.
He continued: “This is such a massive club, and this is the club with more titles in the world, so it needs to have and has the best supporters in the world.
“They go and they follow us everywhere, and they support us from the beginning until the end, and they deserve the team playing like this to please them.
“We need to have this relationship between the supporters and the team, and when things go like that, then everything is going in the right direction.”
Next weekend will see in excess of 30,000 Gers fans rock up at the National Stadium for another huge game – this time the Betfred Cup semi-final with Motherwell.
But before then, Caixinha will grab a well-earned break back home, and then the hard work for the Well game all begins on Tuesday.
He concluded: “No, now I am prepared to go to Portugal to take some vitamin D and some sunshine! It looks like the weather there is a little different there to here, and I am going to enjoy three days with the family.
“I will prepare the week of work, and then on Tuesday, we will restart.”
